AS&E pulls in $6.3M more for Z Portal bomb-finding systems
By Mass High Tech Staff
Security technology company American Science and Engineering Inc. has won a $6.3 million follow-on order from an unnamed client in the Middle East for an unspecified number of its Z Portal cargo and vehicle screening systems.
According to officials at Billerica-based AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI), the Z Portal systems will be used to scan vehicles and trucks entering the client’s high-risk facilities to detect explosive threats and contraband. The Z Portal is a drive-through gantry system based on the company Z Backscatter X-ray technology.
In addition to the Z Portal, AS&E applies the Z Backscatter technology to standard cargo vans to use as drive-by detection systems and to tractor-trailer rigs for larger incognito detection systems for bombs and other contraband, including drugs and weapons.
In February, AS&E received a Partial Termination for Convenience that cut a $67.1 million contract procurement of ZBV Military Trailers to $39.3 million. AS&E announced the contract on Jan. 15 for the ZBV Military Trailers — a ruggedized trailer version of its Z Backscatter Van, which, like the conventional van-based version, is intended for screening vehicles for car and truck bombs and can be driven easily to mission-critical areas.
AS&E reported a fiscal 2008 net income of $17.5 million on revenue of $166.7 million.
