Bluefin signs UK marine robotics deal

By Brendan Lynch

Bluefin Robotics Corp. reports it has struck a United Kingdom distribution deal with marine engineering company Global Marine Systems Ltd.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Under the agreement, Essex, England-based Global Marine will sell and service Bluefin autonomous underwater vehicles and train personnel to operate them. Global Marine, which is more than 150 years old, installs and maintains undersea cables for telecommunications and conducts scientific research for the oil, gas, utilities and renewable energy sectors.

In July, Bluefin reeled in a contract for its spray glider autonomous underwater vehicle from Horizon Marine Inc. Horizon Marine bought the system for an undisclosed amount. Marion-based Horizon analyzes oceanographic data for use in mapping, modeling and forecasting significant events for customers in the oil and gas industry.

In January, the U.S. Navy exercised an option on a previously awarded contract with Bluefin for AUVs. Under the deal, the robotics company will provide its Bluefin-9 mine-detecting AUV to the Navy. Bluefin officials said the contract has a potential value of $29 million and includes engineering, support and other services.

Spun off in 1997 from the MIT AUV Laboratory, Cambridge-based Bluefin is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Battelle Memorial Institute.
