Near-field forum NFC teams with ETSI on standards
By Efrain Viscarolasaga
The NFC Forum, an industry groups focused on the promotion of near-field communications (NFC) standards and technologies based in Wakefield, has signed a deal with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to align the standards developed by both groups.
Both NFC and ETSI have new standards scheduled to be released soon, and this memorandum of understanding is expected to help coordinate activities related to the testing and product certification of those standards. ETSI develops standards for an array of different technologies, including smart cards for mobile communications and other short-range wireless technologies, which is the main focus of the NFC Forum. The work of the two organizations intersect where specifications and standards development come together. The agreement ensures a high level of alignment between the two organizations, according to a statement from the NFC Forum.
Near-field communication is a short-range wireless connectivity technology that evolved from a combination of existing contactless identification and interconnection technologies. The technology operates at 13.56 megahertz and transfers data at up to 424 kilobits per second. It is intended to be a short-range connection standard between two devices that are then connected to other platforms, such as Bluetooth or wi-fi.
