Autodesk opens green East Coast HQ in Waltham

By Efrain Viscarolasaga

California-based design software firm Autodesk Inc. announced the launch of its local headquarters with the opening today of its new office building in Waltham.

The 65,000 square-foot facility, which was designed by local architecture firm KlingStubbins and Cambridge and built by local construction firm Tocci Building Cos. of Woburn, has been constructed with the intention of seeking Platinum LEED Certification standards from the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Core and Shell and LEED for Commercial Interior programs.

The new facility will be the East Coast headquarters for the $2 billion developer of computer-aided design software and home to its architecture, engineering and construction division. The building is now home to 200 employees and has the capacity to hold 400, according to company statements.

Construction of the office involved using Autodesk’s building information modeling software, which was able to predict the building’s energy performance and enable sustainable design and construction, officials said.

Founded in 1982, Autodesk maintains a number of offices in the New England area, including Manchester, N.H., and Colchester, Vt. In May, Autodesk acquired Moldflow Corp., a Framingham-based maker of software for the design and manufacturing of plastic components, for about $297 million.

Autodesk (Nasdaq: ADSK), which makes the industry standard design software AutoCAD, reported a profit of $183.6 million on revenue of $2.3 billion for 2008 and employs more than 7,800 worldwide.
