MIT has made its scholarly articles available to the public on the Internet for free, according to the school.

Under the new policy, faculty authors give MIT nonexclusive permission to publish their journal articles using DSpace, an open-source software platform developed by the MIT Libraries and Hewlett-Packard Co. MIT can publish the material for any reason other than to make a profit. Authors may opt out on a paper-by-paper basis.

MIT’s policy is based on similar language adopted by the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at its Cambridge neighbor Harvard University in 2008.

The policy was unanimously approved by MIT faculty at a meeting last week, the school said.
