HP now selling Boston-Power’s green notebook batteries

After much anticipation, Boston-Power Inc.’s Sonata lithium ion battery is now publicly available to Hewlett Packard Co. notebook customers, the company announced today.
The batteries, which are reported to be longer lasting and environmentally friendlier than traditional lithium ion batteries, are available as accessories for 18 existing HP notebook model lines, which represents 70 percent of the computer maker’s laptop portfolio. Units are available through HP’s website and cost $149.99.
Later this month, Boston-Power’s batteries are expected to be available as a point-of-sale option for new notebook buyers through HP’s website.
Boston-Power originally announced its partnership with HP last December. The company’s battery technology, which is based on nanotechnology, is also the first rechargeable lithium ion battery to earn Nordic Ecolabel certification, a voluntary program developed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and based in Denmark.
In support of the Sonata’s longevity, HP is also offering a three-year warranty on the units as well.
Boston-Power was founded in 2005 by CEO and former Mass High Tech Women to Watch honoree Christina Lampe-Önnerud. Investors have provided the firm with more than $125 million in total funding since its inception. Those investors include Foundation Asset Management, Oak Investment Partners, Venrock, GGV Capital and Gabriel Venture Partners.
