WPI launching a biochem doctorate
By Brendan Lynch
Worcester Polytechnic Institute reports it plans to establish a Ph.D. program in biochemistry.
The program will be run by the school’s department of chemistry and biochemistry, which has offered a bachelor of science and a master of science in the field since 1995, WPI said.
The school said it plans to hire two faculty members to conduct research at the intersection of chemistry and biochemistry. Three faculty members in the biology and biotechnology department will have collaborative appointments in biochemistry.
WPI biochemistry researchers include chemistry and biochemistry department head Kristin Wobbe, whose research focuses on antimalarial compounds. Professor José Argüello works on understanding the structure and function of proteins in the cell membrane that transport ions. Associate professor Grant McGimpsey researches computational biophysical chemistry.
The biochemistry faculty works out of the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center, a $50 million, 125,000-square-foot research facility completed in 2007.
