Micronetics buys RFID lines from M/A-COM RFID
By Efrain Viscarolasaga
Micronetics Inc., a Hudson, N.H.-based maker of microwave and radio frequency components for the defense, aerospace and commercial industries, has acquired the pedestal and forklift-mounted radio frequency identification (RFID) product line of M/A-COM RFID Inc.
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
The M/A-COM RFID product line is made up of portals, sensors and high-performance antennas that act as an air interface for retail warehouse management systems. The platform is designed to help warehouse managers and supply chain organizations streamline material movement within a facility to increase efficiency and reduce loss.
M/A-COM RFID has deployed more than 12,000 portals over the past four years. The sensor segment of the platform recently passed initial beta tests and is entering the pre-production test phase, according to officials at Micronetics (Nasdaq: NOIZ).
The deal gives Micronetics an expanded product line, and officials expect the acquisition to yield both near-term gains and future opportunities. According to an official statement, the manufacturing of the M/A-COM product line will be moved to Micronetics’ plant in Hudson.
M/A-COM RFID, once a part of M/A-COM and more recently Bermuda-based Tyco Electronics Inc., was sold to British aerospace technology developer Cobham PLC last fall for $425 million. At the time of the deal, Cobham officials said they expect to keep the aerospace segments of M/A-COM and sell its commercial divisions, which include the supply chain RFID product line.
