Surgenor joins NeuroMetrix board

By Mass High Tech staff

Waltham medical device company NeuroMetrix Inc. has appointed Timothy Surgenor to its board of directors, as of April 1, 2009.

Surgenor joins the board having served, and continuing to serve, as president, CEO and director of Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems Inc., a Foxborough-based neurostimulation device maker used to treat spinal-cord and peripheral nerve injuries.

In January, NeuroMetrix (Nasdaq: NURO) paid $350,000 to buy intellectual property and technology from Cyberkinetics (OTC: CYKN). The deal gives NeuroMetrix the intellectual property rights of Cyberkinetics’ Andara Oscillating Field Stimulator technology, which relies on an investigational device to stimulate spinal-cord repair and restore sensation.

Before joining Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, Surgenor held the role of executive vice president of Haemonetics Corp.; president of Genzyme Tissue Repair, a cell therapy division of Genzyme Corp.; and executive vice president and CFO of BioSurface Technology Inc.

Surgenor earned his master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School and his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Williams College.

NeuroMetrix focuses on developing and marketing new products that help physicians assess and treat diseases and injuries of peripheral nerves and control pain.

NeuroMetrix reported a net loss of $27.8 million on total revenue of $31.1 million for 2008.
