Northampton student video wins math and science award
By Mass High Tech staff
Two students from Northampton High School have won college scholarships worth $2,000 each from the National Math and Science Initiative’s FILMS (Fun Is Learning Math and Science) Video Competition, aimed at spreading the message that science can be fun. The pair, Robert Schmidt and Nicholas O’Connor, finished second in the contest for their video, “Math and Science are F=µN!”
A high school junior, Travis Grenier, of Rocky Mount, Va., won the grand prize -- a $3,000 college scholarship -- for his animated video, “Crank Dat Calculus.”
The Northampton students shared second place with a finalist pair from Springdale, Ark., Matt Albritton and Seth Biazo, who produced “Trapezoidal Sum” as their video submission.
Supported by NMSI grants, the video competition was open to students enrolled in AP math, science and English classes. Six states produced finalists for the competition.
The contest attracted noteworthy judges in former Nobel Prize winner for medicine Michael Brown; NMSI CEO Tom Luce; Ed Leonard, chief technology officer of Dreamworks Animation SKG Inc.; Texas Instruments Inc. president of education technology Melendy Lovett; and Cynthia Langlands, community investment communications manager at ExxonMobil Corp.
NMSI is a non-profit organization that currently aims to implement its AP Training and Incentive Program and UTeach program.
