WPI adds graduate robotics program

By Brendan Lynch

Worcester Polytechnic Institute reports it has introduced a graduate program in robotics in the fall.

WPI’s master of science program in robotics engineering will comprise 36 credit hours of work along with either a thesis or a capstone design project. More than 30 faculty members will contribute to the program, from the computer science, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering departments.

In 2006, WPI became the first bachelor’s degree program in robotics in the United States.

The program will benefit from WPI’s Robotics Engineering Advisory Board, with members including iRobot Corp. co-founder and board member Helen Grenier, Bluefin Robotics Corp. president David Kelly and DEKA Research and Development Corp. president Dean Kamen.

In addition to these local robotics companies, graduates from the WPI program also have business access to Stockbridge, Vt.-based Advanced Animations Inc.; Amherst, N.H.-based MobileRobots Inc.; Amherst, Mass.-based DigitRobotics LLC; and Cambridge-based Heartland Robotics.

In November, WPI will debut a national university-level robotics competition for undergraduate and graduate students called the Robotics Innovations Competition and Conference, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
