Ten bright and dynamic women who excel in technological innovation, entrepreneurship and community involvement were honored last night during the sixth-annual “Women to Watch” Awards by Mass High Tech: The Journal of New England Technology.

Several hundred entrepreneurs, educators, professionals, family members and friends assembled at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge for the gala event. Each of the 10 women recounted for the audience who inspired them to succeed — in many cases their parents, spouses and children — and how they have overcome hurdles such as institutional prejudice against women in science and technology, to become leaders in their field.

The honoreees included company founders, accomplished researchers and educators, scientists and web innovators.

Mass High Tech, working with an advisory panel drawn from some of the region’s leading academic and business institutions, selected the 2009 honorees, who exemplify the best and brightest among women at the highest level of technology businesses in New England.

Mass High Tech publisher Michael Olivieri told the audience the Women to Watch program offers a positive view of a segment of the business community, women who have proven accomplishments and are viewed as industry leaders of the future.

Mass High Tech editor Douglas Banks described the motivation behind the program and its accompanying special editorial section: “So why do we do this? Because, unfortunately, women remain vastly underrepresented in technology and the sciences. But we at Mass High Tech know they’re out there. We know these stories and are going to continue to tell them and continue to hold events like this until it’s no longer news that there are women doing amazing work in science and technology.”
