CellDesign rolls out fat stem cell research tools

Stem cell research material provider CellDesign Inc. reports it has made available a new group of products based on adult stem cells that can produce fat cells for researchers studying obesity and diabetes.

Officials at New Haven-based CellDesign say the products come from the development of two human adult stem cell lines the company calls ACT-I and ACT-II, which can be used to generate unlimited supplies of human white and brown fat, respectively.

CellDesign makes a point of noting that both lines came from tissue routinely discarded as medical waste, with informed consent of the donors. ACT-I was isolated from material obtained from liposuction and ACT-II came from umbilical cord tissue.

Research at CellDesign used the stem cell lines to create progenitor cell that were “committed” to becoming white and brown fat cells, then preserved them cryogenically. CellDesign worked in collaboration with Gerald Shadel, professor of pathology and genetics at the Yale School of Medicine, to create the new research products.

While these are the first stem-cell-based research tools for CellDesign, the company joins a handful of other New England firms in the space such as Stemgent Inc. of Cambridge and Millipore Corp. of Billerica.

Flagsuit wins another NASA Astronaut Glove Challenge

Homer's first win in 2007 launched his startup, Flagsuit. Flagsuit is developing pressure suits using the same technology as Homer's prizewinning gloves -- for use as a wearable substitute for hyperbaric chambers used to treat conditions such as ...
