Feds fund UMass energy-efficient manufacturing program
By Efrain Viscarolasaga
The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources and the University of Massachusetts Amherst have received a $900,000 grant from the federal Department of Energy to help local manufacturers cut energy usage by 25 percent over the next decade.
The grant is one of 12 nationwide chosen to share approximately $9 million under a three-year federal program called “Save Energy Now: State Industrial Assessment Projects.”
The program will be executed by the Department of Energy Resources and the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at UMass. Under terms of the grant, the group will develop a regional energy efficiency assessment and training program through selected manufacturers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Massachusetts officials will also partner with utilities and business associations in each state to promote the workshops and develop individual state recognition programs for industries that achieve significant energy savings, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
The Industrial Assessment Center at UMass’ Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has previously performed assessments at more than 600 manufacturing plants throughout New England and New York, resulting in industry savings of more than $20 million, state officials said.
The funding will be provided in three yearly installments of $300,000 each.
