Maine opens fund program to nonprofits, colleges

By Mass High Tech staff

Maine’s Seed Grant and Development Awards programs, formerly open to private, for-profit companies only, now is accepting funding applications from nonprofit groups and higher education institutions, according to a release from the Maine Technology Institute (MTI).

The grants are distributed six times in a year and offer funding up to a total of $12,500. These Seed Grants award projects that will move to commercialization. For larger projects, Development Awards of up to $100,000 may be awarded through conditional loans given three times annually and repaid through license fees. Requirements to receive either the Seed Grants or the Development Awards consist of one-to-one dollar match on equipment, staff time, cash, salaries and outside funding.

MTI officials said the funding change is intended to drive technology transfer within the state and increase commercialization of statewide research projects.

Applications for the first Seed Grant round with the adjusted profile requirements are due April 16, 2009, and Development Award applications are due June 15, 2009.

Founded in 1999, MTI was formed by the Maine Legislature as a private, nonprofit organization that is publicly funded.

MTI announced last month that it had awarded almost $500,000 to Manufacturers Association of Maine to develop a Maine Aerospace Alliance to help local companies get certification and training to make them more competitive.

In January, MTI also announced that it had awarded seed grants for 14 Maine organizations, many in the energy and clean tech sector, totaling $155,000.
