Millipore buys Epitome’s EpiTag tech

By Mass High Tech Staff

Life sciences tools and services company Millipore Corp. has acquired the assets related to EpiTag technology from Epitome Biosystems Inc. of Waltham for an undisclosed amount.

The EpiTag technology enables the identification of unique amino acid sequences or “tags” within a protein. According to officials at Billerica-based Millipore (NYSE: MIL), the technology will allow it to offer researchers a broader portfolio of cell signaling assays that can be used with its existing Luminex xMAP platform.

Rick Ryan, vice president of Millipore’s drug discovery business unit, said that the EpiTag technology will allow the company to develop multiplex immunoassays for cellular targets “that were previously very difficult to detect and quantify.”

Earlier this month, Millipore bought Guava Technologies Inc., a California provider of bench top cell analysis systems, for $22.6 million. Millipore and Guava were already partners, having entered into a distribution and co-development partnership in March 2008.

Also this month, Millipore announced a 8,000-square foot Biomanufacturing Sciences and Training Center (BSTC). Millipore has provided support out of Singapore for 25 years, but in a statement, the company explained that many of its customers in biopharmaceutical manufacturing have begun to branch out into Asia in a significant way.

For fiscal 2007, Millipore reported a profit of $136.47 million on revenue of $1.53 billion.
