Babcock Power, ThermoEnergy form new clean power company

By Mass High Tech Staff

Babcock Power Inc. of Danvers has teamed up with ThermoEnergy Corp., an Arkansas company with a subsidiary in Worcester, on a joint company called Babcock-Thermo Carbon Capture LLC.

The new company will develop and commercialize a new carbon capture power plant design based on the ThermoEnergy Integrated Power System technology the companies have been developing since April 2008.

According to officials, the TIPS technology is based on high-pressure oxy-fuel chemistry and results in close to zero air emissions and no smoke stack while burning any carbon-based fuel. In addition, it captures carbon dioxide in a pressurized liquid form that can be sequestered or reused.

James F. Wood, president and CEO of Babcock Power, said in a statement that the launch of the new technology is well-timed with anticipated upcoming CO2 legislation.

ThermoEnergy also has wastewater treatment technologies, which are consolidated in its subsidiary CASTion Corp., with its headquarters and fabrication works located in Worcester.

Babcock Power has subsidiary companies in Kentucky, California, South Carolina and Worcester.
