UTC funds FIRST robotics teams in Conn.

By Brendan Lynch

United Technologies Corp. reports it has given $17,000 each to three Connecticut high schools participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Westhill High School in Stamford and Kent School in Kent received the grants. The grants will be used to help cover equipment, travel and other competition-related expenses, according to officials at UTC (NYSE: UTX).

The Connecticut regional competition will take place March 26 to 28 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. About 80 teams from New England, New York and Florida will participate in the competition.

Earlier this year, UTC announced it would fund an all-female team to compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition in 2010, in partnership with the Connecticut Technology Council.

Hartford-based UTC reported a 2008 net income of $4.7 billion on revenue of $58.7 billion.
