The NERD is in the building. Today, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) launches an ad campaign to promote its New England Research and Development Center, affectionately referred to among those who work there by its easy-to-remember acronym.

The new facility, located at 1 Memorial Dr. in Cambridge, launched last September with an MIT symposium. At the time, the facility employed about 30 workers, and Microsoft said it planned to bring the total staff level to 50.

Microsoft announced last month a plan to cut up to 5,000 jobs in research and development, marketing, sales, legal, finance, human resources and information technology. The company said at the time that no job cuts were expected in its Massachusetts sites. The Redmond, Wash.-headquartered company currently employs about 1,000 workers in the Bay State.

Editor's note: The original version of this story gave an incorrect number of employees in Massachusetts. Microsoft currently employs 1,000 workers in Massachusetts, according to the company.
