Networks
Canton-based Network Engines Inc. (Nasdaq: NENG) has promoted William O’Connell to vice president of manufacturing operations. In this role, he will be responsible for the direct planning, organization and implementation of all manufacturing operations. Prior to this promotion, O’Connell served as director of NEI’s high-volume manufacturing. Before joining NEI in 2000, O’Connell was a new product program manager at Compaq Computer Corp. Previously, O’Connell worked for Digital Equipment Corp. for 22 years. NEI is a developer of server-appliance products and services.

Software
UTest Inc., a Southborough-based software testing company, has hired Matt Johnston as vice president of marketing. Johnston will be responsible for overseeing the strategic planning and execution of uTest’s marketing and communication efforts. Prior to joining uTest, Johnston was vice president of marketing at the services marketplace, OnForce. Prior to that, he was director of marketing at Mimeo.com where he worked to establish the company’s brand and advertising strategy. Before Mimeo, Johnston worked at Herman Miller Inc. in the e-commerce division and research and development group as a commercialization strategist.

Talent management software company Authoria Inc. of Waltham has named Joseph Kaddis, Jr. as vice president sales. Kaddis was most recently vice president of North American sales and business development for Panorama Software. Prior to Panorama, Kaddis served as director of financial services for North America at Hyperion Solutions Corp., which was acquired by Oracle Corp. in April of 2007. Kaddis began his career at Microsoft Corp. as a sales representative managing major accounts, including GE, Pepsi and GTE.

Telecom

Airvana Inc. (Nasdaq: AIRV), a provider of mobile network tools, has appointed Glenn Laxdal as vice president of femtocell product management. In this role, Laxdal will drive global product strategy for the company’s CDMA and UMTS femtocells. Most recently, he served as vice president of global product management for Nortel Networks Corp.’s CDMA and LTE carrier business. Laxdal holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and communications from the University of Saskatchewan, and an MBA from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

Services
Mathew D. Talcoff has been promoted to shareholder at Boston-based Vitale, Caturano & Co. Ltd.’s tax practice. Previously, he worked for 17 years at Ernst & Young LLP, where he helped New England-based businesses with their Financial Accounting Standard 109 needs. Prior to joining the firm, Talcoff was the director of tax at Braver PC. He has a master’s degree in taxation and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bentley College.

The Training Associates, a Westborough-based trainer staffing and consulting service, has hired two new employees, Richard G. Shulman and Stephanie M. Orsi. Shulman will be the enterprise solutions group’s manager of strategic partnerships where he’ll focus on the development of major strategic global accounts. Orsi will be an associate client representative. Previously, she was the lead instructor for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to train them on new and updated software.

TÜV SÜD America Inc., a Peabody-based environmental testing laboratory, has appointed Craig S. Casillas as director of its management services division in the United States. In this capacity, Casillas will oversee the daily operations associated with certification of client management systems to international standards. Casillas previously served as western regional manager for the management services division, where he was responsible for the oversight and management of several TÜV SÜD America global accounts. He also holds authorization as a lead auditor for TL9000, ISO 9001, and OHSAS 18001.
