MIT, MGH, Harvard form institute to cure AIDS with $100M gift

MIT, Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital have formed the Phillip T. and Susan M. Ragon Institute to find cures for immune system diseases. First on the list will be the prevention and cure of AIDS.

The institute was developed with a $100 million gift — the largest gift in MGH history — from the Phillip T. and Susan M. Ragon Institute Foundation. The institute will maintain its administrative offices at MGH.

Phillip “Terry” Ragon is the founder, owner and CEO of InterSystems Corp., a Cambridge health records software firm. Susan Ragon serves as vice president of finance and administration at InterSystems.

Bruce Walker, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has been named director of the institute. Walker has served as director of the Partners AIDS Research Center, now a part of the Ragon Institute.

The institute itself will enable scientists to work independently with flexible funding toward a common mission.
