Students can now research neurotech at MIT

By Brendan Lynch

MIT reports it has launched a neurotechnology research program, including a class on how to launch a neurotechnology startup.

The program will include research areas such as diagnostic imaging of the brain through functional magnetic resonance imaging,  neuropharmacology, enhancements or replacements for sensory or motor systems, and neurostimulation through implanted electrodes to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s or to restore mobility to paralyzed patients.

Classes in the program will include “Principles of Neuroengineering,” “Applications of Neuroengineering” and “Neurotechnology Ventures,” in which representatives of neurotech companies explain how their technical innovations came about and developed into businesses. Students in the class also form teams to produce business plans for neurotech ventures.

The program is intended to stimulate the development of new technologies, including drugs targeting the brain and nervous system, cochlear or retinal implants and “smart” prosthetics.
