As part of a restructuring effort, Chelmsford-based Brooks Automation Inc. reports that it will eliminate another 350 positions, after cutting 10 percent of its workforce last quarter.
In addition to the cuts, Brooks (Nasdaq: BRKS) will also combine its formerly separate vacuum pump and robotic product groups into a single Critical Solutions Group. According to officials, the move is expected to simplify the company’s organizational structure, reduce facility and overhead requirements and more effectively leverage the overall capabilities of the two groups, both based in Chelmsford.
The precise number of jobs lost in the state was not provided. Officials cited the deterioration of the semiconductor capital equipment industry as a reason for the restructuring.
The company expects to incur approximately $10 million to $12 million in charges related to these restructuring actions, of which $4.1 million will be recognized in the first quarter of fiscal 2009.
Brooks, which last September employed 1,658 people worldwide, reported $526 million in revenue with a $236 million net loss for fiscal year 2008, ending September 30. In 2007, the company reported a net gain of $151.5 million on $743 million in revenue.
