Zales builds ZoomInfo by building customer service

By Amber Gay, Special to Mass High Tech

Philanthropic activity and family are two big areas in Sam Zales’ life. Yet, when he isn’t working in the community or spending time with his daughters, he is using his 25 years of strategy, marketing, sales and product development experience in his new role as president of Waltham-based Zoom Information Inc.

ZoomInfo is a source of business information on people and companies. Zales, who was hired by ZoomInfo in December, said he hopes to help bring efficiency to the key areas of recruiting, marketing and sales at ZoomInfo.

“I have been in the business-to-business market for 20-plus years and I want to bring that experience to this company,” he said. “I want to help sales and bring new business to this market while focusing on all three of the key areas for any business.”

He plans to take what he learned while working as president and chief executive officer at BuyerZone, an Internet marketplace for business purchasing, and bring it to ZoomInfo. Before joining BuyerZone, Zales had the opportunity to work in a large organization and, by accepting the BuyerZone position, he was able to work with a company that was still in the early stages of growth.

“I was able to help build a company through the worst part of the economy, post 9/11, and work through the tough economic climate,” he said.

At BuyerZone he led the company from 2000 through its sale to Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier (NYSE: RUK) in January 2007, leaving the company in November 2008. He previously had served as vice president of card marketing at American Express Co., where he was responsible for the launch of the company’s corporate purchasing card. During the nine years he spent with the company, he also led the development of numerous customer acquisition and retention marketing programs for both the corporate services and consumer card divisions. Prior to America Express, Zales worked as a management consultant at Bain and Co. in Boston.

Zales is on the New England regional board of the American Technion Society and is head class agent for the Dartmouth Alumni Fund. He has also chaired the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemoration and served on the board of Temple Isaiah, both in Lexington.

When he isn’t working, he said his priority is spending quality time with his wife and three daughters. He also coaches his daughters’ soccer and softball teams.

Though he enjoys the time outside of work, Zales said he is driven to help ZoomInfo succeed.

“I want to help make sure the company remains customer focused and that we continue to listen to our customers,” he said. “I also want to make this a great company for the employees.”

Flagsuit wins another NASA Astronaut Glove Challenge

Southwest Harbor, Maine's Peter Homer won $450,000 in NASA's Astronaut Glove Challenge yesterday. This is Homer's second time winning the contest.
