AMSC gets order for 100 wind turbine systems from Chinese customer

American Superconductor Corp. has received a new order for 100 sets of its wind turbine core electrical components from China’s CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co. Ltd. for use in 1.65 megawatt wind turbines designed by American Superconductor’s turbine subsidiary AMSC Windtec.

While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, officials called it a “multimillion-dollar order.” American Superconductor (Nasdaq: AMSC) expects to ship all of the components by the end of 2009.

The AMSC components include the Devens-based firm’s PowerModule power converter, which helps control power flows by regulating voltage and controlling the pitch of the turbines.

Based in Zhuzhou City in the Hunan province of China, CSR-ZELRI first began working with AMSC Windtec in January 2007. Under the terms of the original license agreement, AMSC also received the right to provide the company with core electrical components for all of its 1.65 megawatt wind turbines. Including this latest order, CSR-ZELRI has ordered more than 170 sets of core electrical components from AMSC to date.

AMSC and its Windtec subsidiary offer new technologies in both traditional power generation industries, as well as alternative energy sources, such as wind. The company employs approximately 382 employees and reported a $4 million loss on $40.3 million in revenue for its last reported quarter, which ended Sept. 30, 2008.
