AS&E wins $67M order for big-rig Backscatter systems

Security technology company American Science and Engineering Inc. says it has landed a $67.1 million order from the U.S. government for an unspecified number of ZBV Military Trailers — a larger, ruggedized version of the Billerica-based company’s Z Backscatter Van cargo and vehicle screening system.

While AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) didn’t release the number of vehicle-based X-ray inspection systems in the deal, it did say it was a “significant quantity.” The ZBV Mil Trailer will be deployed for counterterrorism applications in harsh environments, according to the company.

The ZBV Mil Trailer is a new AS&E product which, like the conventional van-based version, is intended for screening vehicles for car and truck bombs and can be driven easily to mission-critical areas.

Earlier this month, AS&E landed $2.2 million from an unnamed Middle Eastern law enforcement agency to provide multiple Z Backscatter Vans, along with AS&E-provided operator training, service and warranty.

In December AS&E landed $2.8 million from an unnamed Middle Eastern government for the X-ray detection vans.

The fall was busy for AS&E, which pulled in about $40 million in contracts since September, including a $22.1 million dollar contract from the U.S. Army for maintenance on cargo and vehicle inspection systems located in southwestern Asia. The other contracts, for the company’s Z Backscatter Van, OmniView Gantry inspection system and Z Portal screening system, came from an unnamed U.S. government agency and unnamed Middle Eastern governments.

AS&E reported a 2008 net income of $17.5 million on revenue of $166.7 million.
