Devens-based American Superconductor Corp. announced today the company has received a new order for its D-VAR reactive power compensation product from Midwest power generator Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
American Superconductor (Nasdaq: AMSC) will deploy the turnkey D-VAR solution near Wright, Wyo. According to a company statement, Basin Electric will utilize the D-VAR system to provide steady state and transient voltage support to maintain transmission system stability and reliability in the region. It will have a continuous rating of 34 mega-volt-amperes reactive (MVAR) and a short-term rating of 91 MVAR, making it one of the largest such devices ever deployed in the North American transmission grid, according to AMSC officials.
The system is expected to be operational in Basin Electric’s power grid by the end of calendar 2009. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Basin Electric is a consumer-owned, regional power cooperative headquartered in Bismarck, N.D. It generates and transmits electricity to 126 member rural electric systems in nine states: Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The system distributes electricity to approximately 2.6 million consumers.
AMSC offers new technologies in both traditional power generations industries, as well as alternative energy sources, such as wind. The company employs approximately 382 employees and reported a $25.4 million loss on $112.4 million in revenue for its last fiscal year, which ended in March 2008.
