Waugh sees role for NaviMedix in health-care reform

By Bridget Botelho

When NaviMedix Inc., a health-care communications software company based in Cambridge, announced that former CEO Tim Hargarten was stepping down after seven years, it found it had the perfect replacement in president and chief operating officer Bradley J. Waugh. In December, Waugh was promoted to CEO.

Prior to joining NaviMedix, Waugh served as CEO and president of Wincor-Nixdorf International, a $2.6 billion financial systems and services firm. Before that, Waugh founded Providence-based Watch Hill Partners Inc. in 2000, a company focused on customer-relationship management optimization. He also served on the board of directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island for four years, where he first learned about NaviMedix’ technology, he said.

“The BCBS association was raving about NaviMedix and their ability to communicate (health insurance data to doctors), which will keep the cost of health care down,” Waugh said. “In my career I’ve always worked at trying to improve information access.”

With that experience of NaviMedix’ NaviNet product under his belt, Waugh, a Boston University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management information systems, joined NaviMedix earlier this year as president and COO.

“First, I was aware of the company and NaviNet’s reputation as a great technology solution in the health-care provider space when I was with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Second, information access and connecting key stakeholders has always been something I have been keenly interested in.”

Waugh also serves on the boards of Antenna Software, Point Judith Capital and REVAL.com Inc. Besides BCBS, he previously served on the boards of the RI Convention Center Authority, the Narragansett Bay Commission and ArcStream Solutions. Waugh is the founder and past president of the Rhode Island Technology Council and a past board member of BU.

Besides being active on those boards, Waugh and his wife own a marina in Tiverton, R.I.

While NaviMedix has had success getting some major insurance companies on board over the past decade, there are still many insurance companies who aren’t using NaviNet. As CEO, Waugh has set a goal of getting many more insurers on board while building the company’s brand.

“This is a $50 million company that is 10 years old, but we haven’t strengthened our brand,” Waugh said.

He added, “Today, as we move toward a national health network, having one portal site tying together payers and providers — and someday patients — is the most efficient way to provide information. Most insurers also know it also improves the quality of health care.”
