Molecular Insight touts prostate tumor imaging results

In a published study, Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals Inc. says that its small molecule approach to the discovery and development of molecular imaging radiopharmaceuticals is validated and it plans to complete the Phase 1 trials for its prostate cancer molecular imaging compounds by the first half of 2009.

Cambridge-based Molecular Insight’s lead compounds, MIP-1072 and MIP-1095, showed high affinity and specific binding to PSMA, a protein that is expressed by prostate tumors, according to company officials.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

According to Molecular Insight (Nasdaq: MIPI), prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in the United States, and approximately one in six men will be affected by it in his lifetime.

Last week Molecular Insight reported that one its lead drugs, Zemiva, can improve cardiac ischemia detection by about one half, according to the results of a Phase 2 clinical study. Zemiva is a fatty acid analog that detects cardiac ischemia, or blockage of a coronary artery, by showing abnormalities in the fatty acid metabolism of the heart. Zemiva is visible via any standard nuclear medicine camera, which is found in all accredited U.S.-based hospitals, officials said. It’s believed Zemiva can help quickly and accurately diagnose those chest pain patients actually suffering from cardiac ischemia and allow them to be admitted immediately for treatment.

In another development in prostate examinations, MedicaMatrix Inc. reported the development of a latex glove designed to provide precise measurements of prostates.
