Ronald Lowy named CEO at Helicos Biosciences

By Mass High Tech Staff

Helicos BioSciences Corp., a developer of genetic analysis systems, has named company board member Ronald Lowy as CEO, just three months after having appointed Steve Lombardi to the same position. The position shifts go into effect immediately.

Lowy formerly worked as president and CEO of Fisher Biosciences, a division of Fisher Scientific Inc. He also served as president of Global Connectivity Solutions for ADC Telecommunications, as well as president and chief operating officer at the Krone Group.

Lombardi, who also served as president of Cambridge-based Helicos (Nasdaq: HLCS) while in the CEO position, will continue to work as president of the company, as well as a member of the board of directors. The move positions Lombardi to push commercialization efforts for the HeliScope DNA sequencing system, the company said. As the former COO, Lombardi is credited with shifting Helicos from a research and development firm to a commercial company, according to Stan Lapidus, who held the CEO position prior to Lombardi.

Helicos BioSciences reported a net loss in June 2008 of $11.9 million on quarterly revenue of $250,000.
