Engineering
Ellaine Abueg has been named to the newly created position of business development engineer at design, engineering and manufacturing firm Nathaniel Group of Vergennes, Vt. Most recently, Abueg was a research assistant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she completed her doctorate in biomedical engineering.

Community
Tech Collective, a Providence, R.I.-based tech industry group, has hired Colleen Burg for the position of Information Technology industry liaison, and Liz Scott as manager of community development, focusing on the IT and bioscience industries. Through the state ISDI grant funded by the Governor’s Workforce Board of R.I., Burg will lead Tech Collective’s effort to connect transitioning workers at netWORKri One-Stop centers with area IT companies. Burg will also work on membership expansion for Tech Collective. Most recently, Burg was COO of the nonprofit Big Sister’s Fund. Scott previously worked as the director of advertising for Ocean State Job Lot and as senior administrative assistant for RIMES.

Security
Attivio Inc. has named Alan Cooke, former vice president at Merrill Lynch, as chief financial officer. At Merrill Lynch, Cooke worked as an equity research analyst covering the enterprise software industry, including such companies as Microsoft, Oracle, VMware, Salesforce.com, Sybase, Lawson and Informatica. He also held strategic planning and operations management positions at Oracle Corp. and McKinsey & Co. Cooke earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Ottawa, a juris doctorate from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Networking
Spencer Technologies Inc. of Northborough has named Jeffrey F. Koester as vice president of operations for the IT network and infrastructure cabling company. Prior to joining Spencer Technologies, Koester was an IP/IT technology and management consultant after spending 20 years in the telecom industry. Koester started his career as executive vice president of VICORP Interactive Systems of Boston, followed by serving as COO of Lightship Telecom in Bedford, N.H. Most recently, Koester served as senior vice president of One Communications of Waltham.

Hardware
Cognex Corp. has named Tom Nash as president of the Surface Inspection Systems Division (SISD) of the Natick-based company. Nash takes over management of this division from Markku Jaaskelainen, who has taken on a different project at Cognex. Nash joins Cognex after serving as vice president of operations and marketing for BTU International. Prior to BTU, he served as president of CIMCIS Ltd. Nash has also worked for two divisions of the Black & Decker Corp.

Services
Grail Research, a Cambridge-based global strategic research and decision support firm, has named Boyd Peterson as client service officer (CSO) and a research fellow. Peterson was the senior vice president of consumer and media research and consulting for Yankee Group, focusing on communications, consumer technology and the media and entertainment industries. Prior to Yankee Group, Peterson was a manager and analyst for AT&T’s consumer division. He also held senior marketing positions at software firms BroadJump and Basho Technologies.

New York-based communications consultancy FD has appointed Dan Dent as managing director and general manager of the firm’s Boston office. Prior to FD, Dent served as vice president at Blanc & Otus and its parent company, Hill & Knowlton. Dent earlier managed global programs for Sun Microsystems, HCL Technologies, and Alibaba of China while at Citigate Cunningham, and previously was an account director at Bridgeman Communications in Boston. He began his career as a business reporter at Reuters.
