Comcast is wired for education

Comcast Corp. continues to extend its charitable arm throughout the communities it serves. Nick Leuci, vice president of community investments, said the company looks for a genuine obligation from its employees to give back to communities in as large a way as possible.

“It is as important to be a service provider as it is to be part of helping the community,” he said. “It goes hand in hand. You can’t do one without the other. This is a philosophy that we have instilled from the very top of our organization to each of our employees.”

The company’s community outreach focuses on four concepts: education, youth development, diversity and volunteerism.

In an effort to reach the schools, Comcast donates free high-speed Internet service and free cable service to all libraries and all public and parochial schools, as well as boys and girls clubs that want it. Leuci said with this aspect of charitable work, Comcast donates more than $3 million per year statewide.

“We service a vast majority of the schools and libraries across the commonwealth,” he said. “There are not too many that don’t take advantage of this program.”

To give back to the younger kids, Comcast participates in the New England Cradles to Crayons promotion, which helps donate backpacks filled with school supplies to inner city kids.

As part of its charitable outreach, Comcast also hosts the annual Comcast Cares Day. Last year more than 50,000 employees, family members and friends volunteered to clean up their communities throughout the country.
