MathWorks values involvement

“Do the right thing.” That statement is built into the mission of The MathWorks Inc., and giving back to the community is one way the Natick-based company lives up to that guideline. Specifically, though, the company helps itself when it helps the community — by promoting the math and science fields that makes up its core customer base.
“Our top priority is supporting initiatives related to furthering engineering and technology education and careers, because these are aligned with our business strengths,” said Liz Callanan, corporate relations manager at the Mathworks. “Due to our staff experience and use of our tools, we can have the greatest impact here.”
That leads the MathWorks to support such nonprofits as CARE International education programs and the Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair, among others. The company doesn’t limit itself to educational programs, however. According to Callanan, the company also supports a number of charities of interest to individual staff members, and various energy-saving projects and disaster relief programs.
“This is part of the MathWorks core values — to respect and invest in our staff members and our communities,” Callanan said.
Charity is such a core MathWorks value that it even holds internal awards to recognize those efforts.
“The End of Year Donations program honors the commitments staff members make to charitable organizations,” Callanan said, noting that it also helps encourage others to get involved and allows employees a voice in where the MathWorks’ efforts get applied.
