Gov. Patrick calls for firms to embrace Clean Energy 'challenge'

At last night’s Green Tie Gala, an industry event and awards ceremony sponsored by the New England Clean Energy Council and its industry supporters, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick challenged the business community to get green — through a new program dubbed the Clean Energy Challenge.

Details surrounding the program have not been released, but the principle behind the effort will be to offer incentives to organizations in the state to “dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of energy efficiency measures, innovative energy supply products, and the use of renewable sources.”

The program is expected to launch as a pilot in 2009 and will be executed in conjunction with several local industry organizations, including the Massachusetts High Technology Council, and local utilities NSTAR, National Grid, and Western Massachusetts Electric Co.

The announcement came as the state wraps up what Patrick called “energy week” in the Bay State, which was home to the fourth Conference on Clean Energy and the GreenBuild Expo over the past four days. According to state officials, the two events brought more than 30,000 visitors interested in clean tech and alternative energy to Boston.
