Inotek pulls in two new patents

Inotek Pharmaceuticals Corp., a drug developer in Beverly, has been issued two patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the company’s glaucoma treatment and contrast-induced nephopathy prevention treatment. Both compounds, INO-8875 for glaucoma and INO-4885 for contrast-induced nephropathy, are in Phase 1 clinical development, according to Inotek officials.

INO-8875 is made to lower fluid pressure around the eyes, which tends to be higher in glaucoma patients and can lead to optic nerve damage and potential blindness.

INO-4885 is aimed at people at risk for kidney damage caused by exposure to intravascular radiographic contrast material.

Inotek brought in new director, president and CEO Paul G. Howes last month. Howes worked previously as president of the Americas region for Bausch & Lomb Inc., where he managed pharmaceuticals, surgical and vision care divisions in both North America and South America. Howes filled the shoes of former Inotek CEO Andrew Salzman, who resigned with plans to pursue his career in Israel, where Inotek announced in April plans to sell its drug plant. Inotek director Michael Loberg was appointed interim CEO before the hiring of Howes.

Privately held Inotek targets research on cell injury, cell survival and inflammation.
