Novomer names new CEO, brings bioplastics biz to Boston

By Mass High Tech Staff

Biodegradable materials developer Novomer Inc. has announced plans to move its headquarters from Ithaca, N.Y., to Boston, and to name a new CEO in former Surface Logix Inc. chief Jim Mahoney.

The relocation will bring marketing and business development to Boston, while research and development of biodegradable plastics, polymers and chemicals will continue in Ithaca, Novomer officials said.

Mahoney brings to Novomer a history of successful commercialization, according to Novomer president Charles Hamilton. As CEO at Surface Logix, Mahoney transitioned the company from a focus on chemistry to small molecule drug discovery, bringing in more than $60 million in the process.

Prior to Surface Logix, Mahoney worked at Dade Behring Inc., Baxter International Inc. and FMC Corp.

Mahoney graduated with an master’s in business administration from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management, a master’s degree in international economics from University of Southern California and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Founded in 2004, Novomer uses technology developed at Cornell University and funding from DSM Venturing, Flagship Ventures, Physic Ventures, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.
