Mass TLC touts Constant Contact, Zink Imaging, Paul Maeder among 2008 awardees
Last night at the Boston Sheraton Hotel , the Mass Technology Leadership Council Inc. named Robert Keane, CEO of Lexington-based VistaPrint Ltd., as CEO of the year and Waltham’s Constant Contact Inc. as company of the year, among the dozen awards given out during its 2008 MassTLC Awards gala.
The awards honor business and technology innovators and leaders in the state, and included the "emerging innovative company of the year," which went to Bedford-based inkless printing technology company Zink Imaging Inc.
The council introduced the new Commonwealth Awards this year, as well, to recognize the leaders involved in driving technology in Massachusetts.
After winning the Innovator of the Year award, Y Combinator’s Paul Graham said he’s neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the current economic downturn. “The cycle for startup investing is longer than the boom-bust cycle,” he said. “It just doesn’t matter.” Graham last week published an essay on paulgraham.com titled “Why to Start a Startup in a Bad Economy.”
Raytheon’s Rebecca Rhoads, who won this year’s CIO category, said her company’s need for new software also isn’t affected by the economic downturn. “Amidst the financial turmoil, our business model hasn’t changed; our market hasn’t changed; and our pressures haven’t changed,” she said. Enterprise-wide information security solutions remain her top concern, she said. Raytheon yesterday reported a 12 percent increase in revenue for the third quarter of 2008.
The council received more than 160 nomination submissions and the board of trustees narrowed the list down to the finalists, which then went on to a selection committee for the final choice of the winners, according to officials. Tom Hopcroft, executive director of the Mass Technology Leadership Council, noted that the awards “are an important part of our continued efforts to raise awareness of the incredible innovation and leadership of our local industry.”
