Neurotech Pharmaceuticals opens Cumberland, R.I., facility

By Mass High Tech Staff

Optical therapeutics firm Neurotech Pharmaceuticals Inc. has opened in Cumberland, R.I., a 27,000-square-foot GMP manufacturing facility for the biotech’s chronic retinal disease treatments. Neurotech received $4 million in funding from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. and its units, Rhode Island Industrial Facilities Corp. and Rhode Island Industrial-Recreational Building Authority.

Neurotech produces NT-501, a treatment focused on releasing Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor (CNTF) proteins into the eye to improve Retinitis Pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Neurotech officials report the role of CNTF in reviving dying retinal photoreceptors.

Neurotech completed Phase 1 clinical trials of the NT-501 in 2006, with results showing safe usage in a six-month time period. The product now stands to be tested in Phase 2 and Phase 2/3 clinical trials, which have just completed enrollment, according to Neurotech’s website.

Lincoln, R.I.-based Neurotech USA Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Neurotech Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Delaware.
