Mass High Tech and ACG announce 2008 Tech Dealmaker Award finalists

Mass High Tech and the Boston chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth have announced the finalists for the 2008 Tech Dealmaker Awards program. The annual program recognizes corporate deals involving New England tech companies such as mergers, acquisitions and financings that are significant in their structure and impact on their tech sectors or the region at large.

A panel of judges, including financiers, entrepreneurs and advisors, selected 21 deals as finalists from more than 350 deals that occurred between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008. First place winners will be announced at an evening awards program in conjunction with the ACG Boston Tech Conference on December 4 at the Marriott Copley Place hotel.

In addition to the awards for financings, M&A deals and initial public offerings, the 2008 program includes a special award recognizing the donation of $272 million to Tufts University and Lesley University by two trusts set up by Doble Engineering Co. founder Frank Doble. The funds representing most of the proceeds from Doble Engineering’s sale to Esco Technologies Inc.

Energy and the Environment:

Duke Energy’s acquisition of Catamount Energy Corp.
Great Point Energy Inc.’s $100 million funding
Evergreen Solar Inc.’s $550 million public offering


Hardware Mergers and Acquisitions:

Analog Devices Inc.’s sales of business units to ON Semiconductor Corp. and MediaTek Inc.
Dell Inc.’s acquisition of EqualLogic Inc.
Analogic Corp.’s acquisition of Copley Controls Corp.


Software and Services Mergers and Acquisitions:

BMC Software Inc.’s  acquisition of BladeLogic Inc.
Nuance Communications Inc.’s acquisition of eScription Inc.
Yahoo! Inc.’s acquisition of Maven Networks Inc.


Life Sciences Mergers and Acquisitions:

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.’s acquisition of Bentley Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Glaxo SmithKline’s acquisition of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s acquisition of Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc.


IPO:

Netezza Corp.
Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc.


Strategic Investment:

Desktone Inc.’s $17 million funding
Turbine Inc.’s $40 million funding
Mzinga Inc.’s $32.5 million funding


Financial Investment:

Blackwave Inc.’s $16 million funding
Imprivata Inc.’s $15 million funding
Kayak.com’s $196 million funding


Philanthropic Deal of the Year (Special Award):

Sale of Doble Engineering Co. to Esco Technologies Inc., with the proceeds benefiting Tufts University and Lesley University
