Tough economy takes its toll on top med tech firms

By Stephen DeSantis

This year’s Mass High Tech list of the top 25 medical device companies in New England revealed that last year’s tough market conditions had its greatest effect on the region’s smaller firms.

While there were only slight changes in rank among the list’s top 10 companies, more movement was seen in its bottom 15.

Topping the list were Andover-based Philips Healthcare and Boston Scientific Corp., headquartered in Natick. Mansfield-based Covidien Ltd. dropped from its No. 1 slot on the list to No. 3. In 2007, the firm reported $6 billion in medical device revenue, down from $8.8 billion in 2006. Covidien said it employs 6,100 at its offices in the region, up from just 5,000 in 2006.

In 2006, the total revenue generated by the largest medical device firms in New England was $33.6 billion. In 2007, that fell to $28.6 billion, a 15 percent drop.

Among the new entrants to the list this year were NxStage Medical Inc., a Lawrence-based maker of portable dialysis machines, and Creganna Medical Devices, which opened a new facility in Marlborough. NxStage reported revenue of about $60 million in 2007. Creganna reported $70 million in revenue in 2007 and 50 workers.
