Pratt & Whitney lands $491M propulsion engine contract

Aircraft engine designer Pratt & Whitney has been given a $491 million production contract for F135 propulsion systems to be used in 12 F-35 Lightning II airplanes.
The contract covers propulsion engines for six short-takeoff/vertical-landing (STOVL) aircraft and six conventional take-off/landing (CTOL) aircraft, to begin delivering in third quarter 2009.
Beyond the engines themselves, Pratt & Whitney’s contract includes spare propulsion systems and parts, early logistics and engineering support, production tooling and program management.
The F135 is marked with power stemming from 40,000 pounds of thrust, which have been tested with 16,000 flight hours and more than 17,000 ground test hours. It is the newer, more advanced propulsion system following the F119 engine, built for the F-22 Raptor, Pratt & Whitney officials said.
East Hartford, Conn.-based Pratt & Whitney operates under United Technologies Corp.
