SAIC scores $8.6M Army air-purification deal

Science Applications International Corp., a San Diego research company with operations in Newton that serves the defense, security and government markets, was awarded an $8.6 million R&D contract from the U.S. Army.

The cost-plus-fixed-fee contract calls for SAIC’s research and development on enhanced air purification media and the performance of air purification systems. The contract work will performed in Newton, and is projected to be completed by August of 2013.

The U.S. Army Research and Development Command, Edgewood Branch, at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., awarded the contract, according to the Department of Defense.

SAIC was ranked by Washington Technology as the fifth-largest federal prime contractor for 2007, with $4.4 billion in federal revenue that year, and $8.1 million in overall revenue.

Founded in 1969 by researcher J. Robert Beyster, who also launched the Foundation for Enterprise Development in 1986. The foundation helps governments and private organizations use entrepreneurial employee ownership as an effective social and economic strategy. As part of the foundation, the nonprofit Beyster Institute for Entrepreneurial Employee Ownership was launched in 2002.

With more than 44,000 employees worldwide, SAIC reported a profit of $415 million for 2008, on revenue of $8.9 billion.
