SensAble to provide 3-D modeling for Remedent oral care

SensAble Technologies Inc. of Woburn, a maker of haptic technologies for a variety of applications, has signed an original equipment manufacturer agreement with Belgium-based Remedent Inc., an international company specializing in the research, development, and manufacturing of oral care and cosmetic dentistry products.

While financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, the multi-year, multimillion-dollar deal has SensAble providing Remedent with a customized version of its touch-enabled 3-D modeling system which will be used to design GlamSmile dental veneer products from Remedent.

According to a company statement, the addition of SensAble’s technology will allow GlamSmile-certified dental labs worldwide to produce veneers in less time and lower cost.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry veneers is a strong segment of the $2.75 billion U.S. cosmetic dentistry market, generating $372 million in revenue in 2006.

Founded in 1993, SensAble develops 3-D touch-enabled (force feedback) technologies that allow users to not only see and hear an on-screen computer application, but to ‘feel’ it. The company has amassed 32 patents over the years and deployed more than 6,000 systems in applications ranging from surgical simulation and stroke rehabilitation to dental restorations and toy and footwear design.

SensAble has raised a total of $32 million in private funding since 1993. Investors include New York-based J.&W. Seligman & Co., Canada-based Acer Capital and Boston-based MF Private Capital and Advent International.
