Taligen names new CEO, moves HQ to Cambridge

By Mass High Tech Staff

Taligen Therapeutics Inc. reports it has tapped a local life sciences executive to be its CEO and has moved its headquarters from Denver to Cambridge.

The private biotech startup has given its chief executive job to Abbie Celniker, who was previously the global head of the biologics unit of Swiss drug giant Novartis AG. Prior to Novartis, she held senior posts at Cambridge biotech Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth BioPharma (formerly Genetics Institute of Cambridge) and Genentech Inc., the South San Francisco-based biotech giant.

Celniker will replace former Taligen CEO Woodruff Emlen, who remains president of the biotech, according to the company. The biotech plans to house late-stage research and development in Cambridge and maintain operations in Denver for drug discovery.

Taligen says it is a venture-backed startup focused on the discovery and development of protein-based drugs for inflammatory conditions and diseases. Clarus Ventures, a Cambridge-based venture firm, was among the investors in the first tranche of a $65 million Series B round that Taligen raised in January 2008, according to the company.
