EMC puts $70k toward astronomical observation access

By Mass High Tech Staff

EMC Corp. reports it has donated $70,000 worth of technology and services to the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in North Carolina.

Using the donated technology, the institute will collect observation data contained on astronomical photographic plates and make them available to astronomers, researchers and students via the Internet.

The Institute, founded in 1998, is a nonprofit that works to increase science, technology, engineering and mathematics research and education.

EMC (NYSE: EMC) made the donation through its EMC Information Heritage Initiative, which it started in 2007. The Information Heritage Initiative uses EMC’s storage products to make historical and scientific documents available on the Internet for research and education.

Last month, the Hopkinton-based storage giant donated $250,000 in equipment and software to the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program to support the organizations business and clinical operations. Also last month, completed its tender offer for the outstanding shares of common stock of California-based consumer data storage and backuo company Iomega Corp.
