Acton-based Carbon Design would form a new development office in Irvine, Calif., and members of the ARM SoC Designer development team would join the new office. Carbon would also gain access to ARM intellectual property to optimize its tools to generate models of ARM processors, peripherals and fabric IP, offficials said.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

England-based ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH) is a supplier of tools for the automatic creation, validation and deployment of system-level models.

Carbon Design, founded in 2002, develops tools to create virtual hardware models.

In January, the company closed a $6 million Series E round of funding, increasing the total amount of venture capital raised by Carbon Design to $34 million. Investors include Waltham-based Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Cambridge-based Flagship Ventures and Matrix Partners, which operates an office in Waltham.
