On the heels of an April financing round, SolarOne Solutions Inc., a Framingham-based maker of off-grid solar lighting systems, is taking its technology overseas. The company has secured new projects in Mexico and Ghana, and officials report that more international opportunities are coming in on a weekly basis.
SolarOne will provide lighting for a national park’s parking lot outside of Mexico City, while in Ghana, its off-grid technology will light roadways in Ghana’s infrastructure program.
SolarOne president Moneer Azzam said solar-based systems are efficient for global off-grid projects because they function as soon as they are installed.
“If you do lights that are connected to a grid, you have to install a long string before you can connect them back to the grid and turn them on,” he said.
Each SolarOne system includes a solar panel, a light-emitting diode and a harvester — a small solar generator.
Azzam said projects in Northern Africa and the Middle East will range from 20-system projects costing about $100,000 to 1,000-system projects reaching into the millions of dollars. “We have already booked more this year than we did all of last year, and we’re looking at four or five times (revenue) growth this year,” he said.
SolarOne recently completed an installation at the Bethel Woods Center for Performing Arts in New York.
The company’s recent funding, which came from Fresh Tracks Capital of Shelburn, Vt., and TSG Equity Partners of Stowe, Mass., will also help it continue to deploy product locally.
