NxStage names former Insulet exec to head home division

Dialysis device maker NxStage Medical Inc. reports it has named Jeff Smith to the newly created position of vice president and general manager, home market. Smith will be responsible for expanding the Lawrence-based company’s penetration into the home dialysis products market.

Smith joins NxStage (Nasdaq: NXTM) from Insulet Corp. (Nasdaq: PODD), where he was vice president of marketing and business development. He spent four years with Insulet after serving for 22 years with Abbott Labs in various roles, most recently as divisional vice president of Medisense, Abbott’s consumer diabetes care franchise.

Late last month NxStage Medical raised $43 million through private placement of its common stock and warrants.

NxStage makes products for the treatment of end-stage renal disease and acute kidney failure. The company reported a $58.4 million loss for 2007, on revenue of $60 million.
