Packard Bell picks Carbonite for on-board backup

Online backup provider Carbonite Inc. reports that it signed an agreement with Packard Bell BV for the storied personal computer maker to provide free four-month online backup service subscriptions to purchasers of Packard Bell desktop and notepad computers in Europe.

The agreement is the first partnership between an independent online backup company and major PC manufacturer, Carbonite officials said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Packard Bell is based in the Netherlands.

Boston-based Carbonite, founded in 2005, launched its unlimited online backup service in 2006. The company has backed up more than 3 billion files, has restored more than 200 million lost files for its customers in more than 110 countries, officials said.

In May, Carbonite reported reaching an agreement with Wisconsin-based TDS Telecommunications Corp. to provide online backup service to customers of its Internet service provider business.

Privately held Carbonite has raised about $26 million in venture financing to date, from investors including California-based Menlo Ventures, the 3i Group and Lexington’s Common Angels.
