Cape Cod’s RTDC, Marine Biological Lab have plans for share of Patrick’s $1B

By Mass High Tech Staff

The Marine Biological Laboratory reports it plans to collaborate with the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth to establish a center for regenerative biology and medicine at MBL’s Woods Hole campus, using some of the $10 million made available to it from the passage of the $1 billion Life Sciences Law.

MBL also said the funds will be used to improve infrastructure at the laboratory so it can expand its research and education operations. And in collaboration with UMass Dartmouth and the Regional Technology Development Corp. of Cape Cod, some of the funds will be used to help promote technology transfer and the creation of new companies based on new life sciences technologies.

Regenerative biology is the study of the fundamental mechanisms by which organisms regenerate tissues naturally, and marine organisms hold the most promise as research models, according to MBL officials.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick signed the 10-year, $1 billion life sciences industry stimulus legislation into law on Monday.

RTDC CEO Robert Curtis worked with the state Senate on drafting an amendment to the life sciences bill earlier this year that ensured the Cape in general, and the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in particular received a share of the funds.
